Cristiano Ronaldo’s curious gesture during Portugal vs DR Congo raises eyebrows once again

Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign began on a disappointing note as they were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo.

Heading into the Group K encounter, Portugal were widely expected to secure a comfortable victory, being one of the favourites to go deep into the tournament this summer. However, despite dominating possession, the European giants struggled to find their attacking rhythm, and Cristiano Ronaldo appeared visibly frustrated for much of the contest.

There was, however, one particular incident during the match when Ronaldo was noticeably animated. Interestingly, it occurred when his teammate Joao Cancelo found the back of the net from an offside position.

In footage from the match, Ronaldo can be seen raising his arm towards the linesman, seemingly indicating that Cancelo was offside. The moment stood out because it resembled the kind of appeal a defender might make when an opponent scores. After Cancelo executed an acrobatic overhead kick into the goal, Ronaldo quickly waved his arm, signalling that something was amiss.

While it’s possible he was merely informing his teammate that the goal would not count, this peculiar reaction is not the first of its kind from the Portuguese captain. Ronaldo has been spotted making similar gestures in the past when teammates have scored.

In 2023, during an Asian Champions League fixture for Al-Nassr, Anderson Talisca headed home a late goal to put the Saudi side in front. Yet, even as the ball nestled in the net, Ronaldo was seen once again motioning towards the official in the same manner, suggesting the goal might be offside.

Ronaldo also did something similar back in 2016 while playing for Real Madrid. When Alvaro Morata scored a late winner against Athletic Bilbao, Ronaldo immediately looked to the linesman and waved his hand, appearing to question the legitimacy of the goal.

Some fans have argued that these actions are simply part of Ronaldo’s unique way of celebrating or reacting instinctively on the pitch. However, others believe it conveys his competitive nature and reluctance to see anyone else take the glory. Whatever the reason, the gestures continue to spark debate each time they resurface.
