Lifestyle Desk – Nowadays the problem of thyroid is increasing rapidly. Bad lifestyle, stress, irregular eating habits and hormonal imbalance are considered to be its main reasons. The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck and produces hormones that control the body’s metabolism. When this gland starts producing more or less hormones than required, conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism arise.

Often people start giving various types of advice about what to eat and what not to eat when they have thyroid. However, it is important to understand that the same diet is not right for every thyroid patient. The conditions of hypo and hyperthyroid are different, hence there should be a difference in the diet also.

What things to avoid in hypothyroid?

  • In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is unable to produce enough hormones, due to which the metabolism slows down. Due to this, problems like weight gain, fatigue, constipation and lethargy can occur.
  • In such a situation, one should stay away from highly processed food, junk food, sweet beverages and things with high sugar content. These can promote weight gain and inflammation in the body. Apart from this, excessive consumption of soy products can also affect the absorption of thyroid hormones in some people.
  • Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and turnip should also be avoided in large quantities in their raw form. Some elements present in these can hinder the use of iodine. However, they can be cooked and eaten in limited quantities.

What should not be eaten in hyperthyroidism?

  • In hyperthyroidism, the body starts producing more thyroid hormone than required. This can cause problems like weight loss, rapid heartbeat, nervousness and excessive sweating.
  • In this situation, excessive consumption of foods rich in iodine can be harmful. It is advisable to avoid seaweed, iodine supplements and foods high in iodine. Apart from this, foods with high caffeine content like coffee, energy drinks and some soft drinks can also increase restlessness and palpitations.
  • Spicy and highly fried foods can also aggravate symptoms in many people, so it is better to consume them in limited quantities.

Which foods are beneficial for thyroid patients?

  • According to experts, thyroid patients should pay attention to a balanced and nutritious diet. Whole grains, green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits, pulses, nuts and seeds provide essential nutrients to the body.
  • Nutrients like selenium, zinc and iron can help in better functioning of thyroid.
  • Drinking adequate amount of water, doing regular exercise and taking medicines on time are as important as proper eating habits.
