Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up to usher in a new phase of ambition by making a record-breaking move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. After a period marked by inconsistency and frustration, head coach Roberto De Zerbi has pinpointed the Italian international as the key player capable of anchoring his north London rebuild.
Spurs set sights on Tonali as marquee signing
Tottenham are prepared to go all in for Tonali this summer as De Zerbi plans a major revamp of his squad. The Italian manager views his compatriot as the perfect driving force in midfield, with the north London outfit keen to leave behind a difficult spell that saw them hovering near the lower end of the Premier League standings over the past two seasons.
This ambitious pursuit aligns with ownership’s renewed commitment to support the new era. In a message to fans following a disappointing campaign, during which Spurs cycled through three different managers, the Lewis family pledged full backing for De Zerbi in the transfer market. The statement read: “We take responsibility for rebuilding Spurs. Our ambition is to restore the club’s spirit and bring back the excitement, the bravery, and the attacking football that has always defined us. Football comes first. The board and executive team have outlined their plans to achieve this ambition.”
Breaking the transfer record
To land Tonali, Tottenham are reportedly willing to exceed their current transfer record. As per GIVEMESPORT, internal talks within the club reveal a readiness to spend between £80 million and £85 million, possibly with additional performance-related bonuses included. This would surpass their previous record of £55 million spent to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon in 2019, signalling a clear message of intent to their Premier League rivals.
Newcastle, however, are said to be holding out for closer to £100 million. Yet, given the club’s efforts to stay compliant with Financial Fair Play and the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Rules, they may have to negotiate. Newcastle have already demonstrated a pragmatic approach by approving Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona to ease financial pressure. Although Spurs have not yet made a formal offer for the 26-year-old, discussions with the player’s representatives are reportedly progressing positively.
Manchester United step back as Spurs push ahead
The competition for Tonali was initially intense, but Tottenham have taken the lead after one major rival backed away. Manchester United, once strongly linked with the midfielder, are believed to be reluctant to meet Newcastle’s steep valuation. Their withdrawal leaves Spurs to face interest from Arsenal and Manchester City, both of whom have inquired about the player’s availability. Nevertheless, Tottenham are hopeful that De Zerbi’s promise of a central role in his project will appeal more to Tonali than joining a club already contending for titles. The Italian coach is eager for a marquee signing to ensure the club avoids another season ending near 17th place.
Busy transfer window for Tottenham
If Tottenham complete the Tonali transfer, he would become part of an active summer recruitment drive. The club has already secured Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers and remains in negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion for defender Jan Paul van Hecke, despite having two initial bids rejected by the Seagulls' management.
Adding Tonali would mark a major leap in both quality and financial investment. Although the midfielder reportedly favours a possible return to Serie A if he departs St James’ Park, the Premier League’s financial power could make a move within England more feasible. For Tottenham, agreeing to a fee around £85 million would be a powerful statement that the club’s leadership is ready to back its ambition and reclaim a place among Europe’s elite.
