New Delhi: India equalled South Africa’s elite record for the most 400-plus totals in ODI history after posting a huge total of 402 runs on the board in their 2nd ODI against Afghanistan at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, June 17. India rode on magnificent centuries from skipper Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan to cross the 400-run mark in Lucknow.

Gill slammed a brilliant 154 off 110 balls, while Kishan smoked 125 off just 79 deliveries to set up the stage for a mammoth total for India. The hosts lost wickets in quick succession after the duo’s departure, but managed to go past the 400-run mark for the eighth time in ODIs.

India have now equalled South Africa’s record for most 400-plus totals in ODI cricket. The Men in Blue have posted totals in excess of 400 runs eight times in the fifty-over format, the most by any team alongside South Africa, who have also achieved the feat eight times. England are in the second spot, having scored over 400 runs seven times in ODIs, followed by Australia (3) at the third spot.

Teams with most 400+ totals in ODIs

8 South Africa/India

7 England

3 Australia

England hold the record for the highest-ever total in ODI history with their total of 498/4 against Netherlands in June 2022. India’s highest ODI total of 418/5 came against the West Indies in Indore in 2011. India’s total of 402 runs in Lucknow on Wednesday is the second-highest by any team against Afghanistan in ODIs, only behind Australia’s 417/6 in Perth in 2015.

Gill, Kishan star with tons

Skipper Gill and Kishan starred in India’s dominant batting performance against Afghanistan with respective tons at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Gill smashed a magnificent knock of 154 runs off 110 balls, laced with 22 fours and two sixes, while Kishan slammed 125 off just 79 deliveries, laced with seven sixes and 14 fours.

The duo shared an impressive 224-run stand for the third wicket to set up the platform for a big total for India. However, India lost momentum after the duo’s departure as the likes of Shreyas Iyer (26), KL Rahul (0) and Washington Sundar (19) failed to make an impact. Nonetheless, India managed to breach the 400-run mark to set up a huge target for Afghanistan.

A win in the 2nd ODI will help India take an unassailable 2-0 lead and clinch the three-match ODI series.
