Modric Tipped for Real Madrid Return This Summer

Modric has been tipped to make a remarkable return to Real Madrid by fellow Croatia legend Davor Suker, speaking to Radio MARCA.

Modric left the Bernabeu for AC Milan last summer after a highly successful 13-year spell in which he won the Champions League six times.

With Florentino Perez re-elected as president — the man who signed Modric from Spurs in 2012 — Real Madrid is currently going through a major restructuring process.

Jose Mourinho was the manager when the midfielder arrived from the Premier League in 2012, and he is now back in charge in the Spanish capital as Los Blancos' fourth head coach within a year.

Suker tipped a Real Madrid return for Modric

Discussing his compatriot’s future, Suker said: “Now they asked me where he’s going to stay, either in Milan or in Madrid... I think something is going to happen with Real Madrid.”

“He’ll definitely come back, but I don’t know how... Let’s wait until after the World Cup and see what happens,” Suker then added.

On Wednesday, Modric will once again captain Croatia against England in a Group L match in Arlington, Texas.

Given that Modric turns 41 on September 9th, Suker was asked whether a return to the Bernabeu would be as a player or in a coaching or behind-the-scenes role.

“I can’t say any more, I can’t say any more, my friend. Give me some space, you can’t say everything,” Suker replied.

Suker remained confident, however, stating: “I’m sure he's going to do something with Real Madrid, I can assure you of that.”

“He’s one of the best in the world and, of course, the best in Croatia,” concluded Suker, who also spent time in the Spanish capital during the 1990s.

As for Modric, it is possible that he could take on a coaching position within Mourinho’s staff. He was previously offered a similar role under Carlo Ancelotti, and his close relationship with the Portuguese coach could help facilitate a move into an assistant role.

A similar path proved highly successful for Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid. The Frenchman served in a comparable role under Ancelotti before taking charge himself, leading the club to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles with Modric playing a key role from 2016 to 2018.
