Air India now offers 'Basic' fare on certain domestic flights
17 Jun 2026
Air India has launched a new 'Basic' fare on select domestic routes, aimed at price-conscious travelers.
The new category is being tested on select routes and is available only in Economy Class.
It is part of the airline's existing fare structure that includes Value, Classic and Flex fare categories introduced in 2024.
Meals not included in 'Basic' fare
Fare details
The 'Basic' fare allows passengers to carry 15kg of check-in baggage and 7kg of cabin baggage.
A complimentary tea or coffee service is also included in the ticket price.
However, unlike other fare categories, complimentary meals are not provided under this new option.
Passengers can pre-purchase meals up to 24 hours before departure if they wish to have one onboard.
Basic fare an additional option, says Air India
Customer feedback
Air India has said that the introduction of the 'Basic' fare reflects its pro-consumer approach, recognizing different traveler preferences.
The airline also clarified that this new category is an additional option and does not replace existing fare categories.
Passengers can still opt for Value, Classic or Flex fares with complimentary meals and other bundled benefits.
Consumer protection built in
Booking options
Air India has built consumer protection into the Basic fare structure for passengers who opt to pre-purchase meals.
In case of a schedule change or re-accommodation onto a different flight, pre-purchased meals will be automatically transferred to the new service or refunded if unavailable.
The airline has also made it clear that the Basic fare can only be booked through its direct booking channels during this trial phase.
