WhatsApp may soon introduce a username feature that will allow you to chat without sharing your phone number. Each user will then be able to choose a unique username, similar to Instagram or Telegram.
You can use a username instead of a phone number to message anyone. This will allow you to keep your mobile number private when talking to strangers.
However, a phone number will still be required to create a WhatsApp account. The username feature is likely to be optional, meaning it can only be used if you choose to.
According to some reports, a Username Key option may also be available for additional security. This feature is expected to be rolled out in phases. Therefore, not all users will receive it at the same time.
This new feature of WhatsApp can increase privacy and reduce the need to share numbers.
