Former Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly has lodged a police complaint against a page called ‘Sourav Ganguly Fans’. The 52-year-old former left-handed batter has put forward his complaint at the Thakurpukur Police Station. According to the complaint filed by the former Indian legend, the page is posting information that is ‘maligning and misleading’
The complaint read, “Being a public figure, I understand that opinions and criticism are a part of public life; however, spreading misleading, defamatory, and damaging content with the intention of harming my reputation is unacceptable and requires appropriate legal action.”
“I therefore request you to kindly register my complaint against the individuals/group operating this page and take necessary action as per the applicable laws.” The page in question clearly states it is a fan page that runs for hardcore followers of the former skipper.
Sourav Ganguly’s career with Indian cricket
The left-handed batter made his India debut in 1991 during an ODI game against the West Indies. After which, he was dropped from the side and had to wait five years for his international recall. Bengal batter then made his Test cricket bow against England at Lord’s along with Rahul Dravid and scored 131 runs.
In 2000, he became the captain of the Indian cricket team at the height of the match-fixing saga. Under his leadership, Team India went on to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2001 and also drew the series 2-1. He also led the team to a famous series win in Pakistan in 2004.
Sourav’s biggest moment as a captain was helping the team reach the finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup, where they lost to Australia in the finals. Greg Chappell’s entry as the coach saw the stylish batter being stripped of his captaincy and eventually losing his place in the team for 18 months.
He successfully returned to the national side in late 2006 and was part of the 2007 ODI World Cup squad as well. After 17 long years as an international player, Sourav Ganguly called it quits in 2008. He also led the Kolkata Knight Riders side in the early part of the IPL and then went on to play for Pune Warriors India for a few years.
After his retirement, the former skipper headed the Cricket Association of Bengal and also the BCCI. He decided to give the captaincy to Rohit Sharma in late 2021.
