Let us tell you that in October last year, the news of death of children due to drinking cough syrup in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan had scared people a lot. Many children died due to kidney failure due to drug consumption. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) had issued advisories on the rational use of cough syrups used to treat children. During investigation, it was found that the amount of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) in the syrup was more than 48%, whereas the acceptable limit is only 0.1%.
This change comes after the government amended the ‘Drugs Rules, 1945’ through the ‘Drugs (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2026’. This amendment was notified in the Government Gazette on 9 June.
