Big Bash League (BBL), Australia’s premier T20 tournament, is set to host its opening match, reportedly in Chennai, later this year. The move has been viewed as path-breaking, as Cricket Australia (CA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are entering into a new partnership of sorts as far as franchise cricket is concerned.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, in his chat with PTI, revealed the real reason behind the Big Bash coming to India later this year. Mr. Dhumal said, “We (India) are the biggest market in cricket. So, Cricket Australia wants to capitalize on that. India, being the leader in world cricket, has a lot of scope to add to world cricket.”
“Cricket becoming part of the Olympics is also good for the game in terms of its presence to be felt across the world. I’m sure CA would have done their calculations and will be expecting a good boost to their domestic tournament.”
South Australia has expressed interest in hosting an IPL game at the Adelaide Oval, depending on the approval given by the Indian board. The move to host the BBL game in India will surely help the dream of seeing some IPL matches in Australia become a reality in the future.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to announce the historic BBL game formally
Tom Morris, who happens to be a journalist with 7Cricket, had put out a tweet a few days ago which read “Indian PM is expected to be in Sydney July 8-10. And it is there, and then he is set to formally announce the first game of the BBL season in Chennai. The match will likely begin at 8.30-9 pm AEST, which is mid-afternoon in Chennai.”
Once the move is formally announced, the landscape of franchise cricket could change forever. Plenty of Australian cricketers like Pat Cummins, Mitchell StarcTravis Head, and Josh Hazlewood are household names in India due to their association with the league.
In 2009, Cricket South Africa hosted an entire season of the Indian T20 league due to the general elections that year in India. Rajasthan Royals had also played a game against Middlesex in 2009 that was held in England, which saw Shane Warne’s side go on to win by 46 runs.
