JoSAA Counselling 2026: What do Freeze, Float, and Slide mean in JoSAA counselling? Know this before seat confirmation.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has released the seat allocation results for the first round of counseling. Students who have been allotted seats must complete the seat acceptance process—including fee payment and document verification—within the stipulated timeframe. Students can check their seat allotment status on the official JoSAA website. The deadline to complete the seat acceptance process for the first round is June 26, 2026.

The JoSAA counseling process involves registration, choice filling, mock allotment, seat allotment, document verification, and fee payment. Three terms are frequently used during this process: Freeze, Float, and Slide. Let us understand what these three terms mean. Students seeking admission to IITs must know this before confirming their seats.

What is the 'Freeze' option?
If a student chooses the 'Freeze' option, it means they accept their allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds of counseling.
Once the seat is secured, it is considered final, and the student will not be eligible for any further seat upgrades.

What is the 'Float' option?
The 'Float' option allows students to accept their allotted seat while remaining eligible to opt for a more preferred course or institute in subsequent counseling rounds.

If a seat corresponding to a higher preference becomes available in a later round, the candidate may receive an upgraded seat.

What is the 'Slide' option?
Choosing the 'Slide' option means the student accepts the allotted institute but wishes to be considered for a better branch within that same institute.
They will not be considered for admission to other institutes in subsequent rounds.

What are Opening Ranks and Closing Ranks?
After every round of counseling, JoSAA releases the starting and final rankings for each course and institute. The JEE Advanced rank at which the admission process begins is known as the 'opening rank,' while the rank at which it concludes is called the 'closing rank.' These rankings help students gauge their chances of securing admission in subsequent counseling rounds.

Why is the seat acceptance fee necessary?
Students who are allotted a seat must pay the seat acceptance fee and upload the required documents within the stipulated timeframe; failure to complete these steps may result in the cancellation of the allotted seat.

What is choice locking?
Students are required to save and lock their preferred choices of institutes and courses before the deadline. Once the choices are locked, modifications are generally not permitted; therefore, it is crucial for candidates to carefully review their preferences before submission.
