Will India Escape El Nino's Wrath? Experts Pin Hopes on Indian Ocean Dipole

As concerns grow over the development of El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean, meteorologists are closely monitoring another crucial climate phenomenon that could influence India's rainfall outlook — the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

The IOD is currently in a neutral phase, but weather agencies are watching for signs that it could turn positive later this year. Such a development may help offset some of the adverse effects traditionally associated with El Nino and support a stronger monsoon season across India.

Why the Indian Ocean Dipole Matters

The Indian Ocean Dipole is a climate pattern driven by differences in sea surface temperatures between the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean.

According to NASA, a Positive IOD occurs when waters near the western Indian Ocean, close to Africa, become warmer than average while waters near Indonesia in the eastern Indian Ocean remain cooler. A Negative IOD is the opposite, with warmer waters in the east and cooler waters in the west.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which was among the first major weather organizations to identify the emerging El Nino conditions, has indicated that a positive IOD may develop during the latter half of the year.

Positive IOD Could Reduce El Nino's Impact

Climate experts caution that it is still too early to determine how strong a positive IOD might become or exactly when it will develop. However, historical weather patterns show that positive IOD events have often helped weaken the negative influence of El Nino on India's southwest monsoon.

If a positive IOD emerges this year, it could provide a much-needed boost to rainfall and help maintain favorable conditions for agriculture, water resources, and reservoir levels across the country.

Monsoon Continues to Advance

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said conditions remain favorable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over the next two to three days.

The monsoon is expected to expand into additional parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, and southern Chhattisgarh during this period.

Monsoon rains have already entered parts of Jharkhand and Odisha, and weather officials expect the system to strengthen further in the coming days.

Rain Activity Likely to Increase Across States

Several regions are already experiencing active pre-monsoon weather. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds has been reported in Rajasthan and several other states.

In Madhya Pradesh, districts including Bhopal witnessed intense rainfall on Saturday evening, bringing relief from soaring temperatures.

With monsoon activity gathering pace and the possibility of a supportive positive IOD emerging later in the year, weather experts remain cautiously optimistic about a healthy rainfall season despite the looming El Niño threat.
