Three policemen have been suspended following a complaint of harassment made against them by Bangladesh's cricketer Nayeem Hasan in Chattogram. This incident has caused shockwaves across the cricket fraternity in the nation with BCB and fellow cricketers also demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.
The suspended officers were sub-inspector Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, constable Mohammad Rasel Chowdhury and one more constable from the Police Operation Management Unit according to reports by local media. A three-member probe body has also been formed to look into the entire matter.
The Chattogram Metropolitan Police commissioner Shawkat Ali met with the cricketer at his residence on Saturday and has assured of appropriate action based on the outcome of the investigation.
Police Face Questions As Investigation is Launched
Deputy commissioner Amirul Islam of Chattogram Metropolitan Police confirmed an investigation into the incident has been initiated.
Amirul told The Daily Sun:
“It appears initially that the officers involved did not follow proper procedures during the operation. We will ensure that he [Nayeem] receives justice, and whoever is found responsible will be brought under punishment."
The unfortunate incident occurred late Friday night, after Nayeem's return to Chattogram from Dhaka. The off-spinner had gone to the district from Dhaka with Prime Bank Cricket Club for a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match against Savar but did not play.
Nayeem alleged that while he was travelling to his residence in a CNG auto-rickshaw, it was stopped near Lalkhan Bazar and three men – alleged to be police officers – without any prior explanation and proceeded to shove Nayeem into another auto and transport him to Khulshi Police Station.

BCB and Cricketers Seek Action
Bystanders had apparently informed the three men that Nayeem was an international player for Bangladesh, however, it is understood that did not do anything to change the situation. The 26-year-old was allegedly released in the wee hours of Saturday and returned home. News soon broke about the ordeal which consequently created a ripple of outrage among Bangladesh cricketers like Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has strongly condemned the act and demands that whoever is responsible be properly punished. The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh had also expressed their concern about the incident.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal came out in support of Nayeem and promised that the board will back him up. With an investigation into the entire incident under way, three officers of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police have already been suspended.
