World Cup Day Two: USA Shine with Dominant Win as Canada Make Historic Breakthrough

The clash between the United States and Paraguay produced a flurry of goals, while Canada’s encounter with Bosnia and Herzegovina proved to be a tense and tightly contested battle.

Day two of the World Cup offered fans a blend of thrilling football and a historic achievement for the host nation, Canada.

After a dramatic opening day that saw multiple red cards in the Mexico vs South Africa fixture, it was time for co-hosts the United States and Canada to begin their campaigns on Friday.

Here’s a complete look at the standout moments from the second day of the 2026 World Cup.

The day’s first match featured Canada officially beginning their hosting duties, with an opening ceremony highlighted by a performance from Michael Bublé.

However, once play got underway, the home side struggled to find their rhythm during the first half, as Bosnia and Herzegovina looked the stronger and more composed team.

Jovo Lukic’s goal in the 21st minute gave the Balkan side a deserved half-time advantage. But whatever head coach Jesse Marsch said to his players during the interval clearly had an impact.

Canada returned to the pitch with renewed energy and determination. After several attempts to break through, they finally equalised in the 78th minute through a well-taken goal by Cyle Larin.

From that point, it appeared the Canadians might go on to win. They finished the match with 60% possession, registered 13 shots compared to Bosnia’s eight, and led the expected goals (xG) statistics.

Nevertheless, Bosnia and Herzegovina defended resiliently and managed to hold on for a hard-earned point.

For Canada, the draw marked their first ever World Cup point — a historic milestone for the Maple Leafs, even if they were hoping for all three.

Heading into this World Cup, few expected much from co-hosts the United States. But Mauricio Pochettino’s side made a powerful statement in their opening fixture against Paraguay.

The USA’s 4-1 victory over the South American side not only looked impressive on paper but also demonstrated a confident and dynamic performance that captured global attention.

The American squad played with remarkable intensity, showcasing quick passing, fluid movement, and tactical precision. They dominated Paraguay through clever overloads and maintained composure throughout the match.

It’s still early in the tournament, but Pochettino’s USA team have already signalled that they could be a force to reckon with, especially with the backing of a passionate home crowd.

Leading the charge was striker Folarin Balogun, who scored twice to seal the victory and make an early claim in the race for the Golden Boot.

Historically, Golden Boot winners tally between six and eight goals, and with two already to his name, Balogun has made a promising start. Whether the USA progress far enough for him to challenge for that honour remains to be seen.

With his confidence high, Balogun will be eager to continue his scoring form when the USA face Australia and Turkey later in the group stage.

Many had tipped Christian Pulisic to be the standout player for the United States, but the winger was substituted at half-time following an injury scare. Addressing the incident, Pochettino said: “We didn’t want to take any risks. It was difficult for him to walk, but we hope it’s nothing serious and that he’ll be ready for the next game.”

Meanwhile, Ghana have suffered a major setback even before their first World Cup match, scheduled for Thursday, 18 June, against Panama.

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been denied entry into Canada after his visa application was rejected.

The decision stems from ongoing criminal charges against the Villarreal player, who has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault.

The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged an official protest with Global Affairs Canada, but it remains uncertain whether the travel ban will be lifted — and if so, whether it will happen before Ghana’s opening fixture.
