Guwahati, June 14: In response to escalating fuel prices, the All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) has announced a substantial 70% increase in bus fares for routes connecting Lower Assam to Guwahati, effective from July 1.

The association has already submitted a formal request to the Chief Minister for approval of this fare adjustment.

One member of the association stated, "We have presented our memorandum to the Chief Minister and are currently awaiting the government's decision regarding the fare increase and the specifics of the adjustment in the near future."

Another member justified the fare hike, citing the rising costs of fuel and essential goods, which have strained the financial viability of transport services.

"With the significant rise in fuel and commodity prices, it has become increasingly challenging for transport operators to maintain their services. While fares have been raised in Upper Assam, Lower Assam has not seen a similar adjustment. Without a fare increase, it will be tough to manage loan repayments and ensure a stable income for our workers," the member explained.

He also cautioned that if the government does not approve the fare increase, bus operators might resort to protests.

"Should the fare not be adjusted by July, we will have no choice but to consider alternative actions, including protests. I urge the public and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to support us so that transport workers can sustain their livelihoods," he added.

As the association awaits feedback from the government, both passengers and transport operators are hoping for a resolution that balances commuter affordability with the financial health of the transport sector.

The anticipated fare increase is likely to have a significant impact on daily commuters traveling from various regions of Lower Assam to Guwahati.

"At present, the bus fare from Pathsala to Guwahati is Rs 100. A 70% increase would raise it to Rs 170, which is quite steep. This will place a heavy burden on many. However, if the association decides to proceed with the fare hike, we have little choice but to comply as we still need to travel," remarked a passenger.

To keep commuters informed about the proposed fare changes, the association has started posting notices on buses operating along the Lower Assam-Guwahati route.
