West Indies kicked off their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a bang, clinching a seven-wicket win over the defending champions, New Zealand, at The Rose Bowl on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 163, the Caribbean team made it look easy, reaching the finish line in just 19.5 overs while losing only three wickets. Shemaine Campbelle played a crucial role, delivering a stellar performance, and captain Hayley Matthews also made significant contributions.

Campbelle was the star of the show, finishing with an impressive 90 runs off 62 balls, which included seven boundaries and three sixes. Matthews supported her well, adding 48 runs from 37 balls, featuring six fours and a six.

The West Indies had a shaky start when opener Qiana Joseph was run out for just two runs. Deandra Dottin managed six runs, while Jahzara Claxton remained not out on five. For New Zealand, Jess Kerr was the standout bowler, taking two wickets for 17 runs in her four overs.

Brooke Halliday was the top scorer for New Zealand, making 40 runs off 32 balls, with five boundaries to her name. Opener Isabella Gaze got them off to a decent start but fell after scoring 39 runs off 29 balls, hitting eight boundaries.

Maddy Green chipped in with a solid 35 runs off 22 balls, including four fours and a six, helping New Zealand post a competitive total. However, the top order struggled, with Georgia Plimmer scoring 8, captain Melie Kerr 5, and Izzy Sharp also 5. Jess Kerr ended up not out on 2. Next up, New Zealand will face Sri Lanka on June 16.
