Ruben Amorim has reportedly secured the leading position to become the new AC Milan manager following a decisive round of talks with the Serie A club’s leadership. The Portuguese tactician, who previously managed Manchester United, has now emerged as the frontrunner to guide the Rossoneri into their next chapter, surpassing other contenders in Milan’s search for a tactical transformation at San Siro.
Amorim takes the lead in Milan’s managerial hunt
The race to appoint AC Milan’s next head coach has undergone a major shift in the last 24 hours. Although numerous names have been associated with the vacancy, Ruben Amorim has now moved into prime position after a detailed and constructive meeting with the club’s ownership. The Portuguese coach, aiming to rebuild his standing following a challenging period in the Premier League, is now being considered the main candidate to take over from the current outgoing management team.
According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan have proposed an initial two-year contract with the option to extend for a third season. This offer reflects Gerry Cardinale’s commitment to bringing long-term stability to a project that faltered in the previous campaign. Interestingly, the collapse of Ralf Rangnick’s potential management involvement has allowed the club’s hierarchy to focus more freely on Amorim, now viewed as the top choice to lead the side.
Glasner drops down the pecking order
Amorim’s rise has coincided with a decline in Oliver Glasner’s standing, who until recently appeared the favourite for the job. Glasner, strongly supported by Ralf Rangnick, has seen his chances diminish after the German’s influence over Milan’s technical direction faded. As a result, the Rossoneri’s leadership has taken a more independent approach, leading to what insiders have described as a “sharp drop” in Glasner’s prospects despite his prior achievements.
The club’s decision-makers are now focusing on appointing a coach who embodies a specific tactical identity. Owner Gerry Cardinale has outlined his vision for Milan to play with a high defensive line, maintain aggression during transitions, and prioritise rapid ball recovery. Amorim’s footballing philosophy aligns closely with this proactive approach, making him a better fit than other shortlisted candidates. It is worth noting that the former Sporting CP coach had been on Milan’s radar two years ago before the club opted to appoint Paulo Fonseca instead.
Financial considerations and remaining options
While the selection process continues, Matthias Jaissle remains a potential alternative candidate. However, his current contract with Al-Ahli includes a €6 million release clause—an expense Milan would rather allocate towards player acquisitions than a managerial buyout. This financial factor further strengthens Amorim’s candidacy as the most practical and strategic option for the club moving forward.
Alongside Amorim and Jaissle, Gerry Cardinale has also made contact with Alvaro Arbeloa, who is currently available after his recent departure from Real Madrid.
Milan under pressure to appoint Allegri’s successor
With the 2026-27 Serie A season approaching and the summer transfer window gaining pace, Milan are under pressure to finalise their managerial appointment. The club has yet to find a replacement for Massimiliano Allegri following their failure to qualify for the Champions League last season, adding urgency to their decision-making process.
Amid growing frustration among supporters demanding a clear direction for the club’s future, Milan’s management hope that appointing a new head coach will mark the beginning of a much-needed “reconstruction.” The goal is to establish a unified sporting strategy and a renewed sense of purpose before the pre-season preparations begin in full swing.
