(Health Corner) :- India’s ancient Yoga Vidya, which is more than two thousand years old, has today made its mark globally. At present, 193 countries have officially adopted yoga. Various aspects of yoga are mentioned in Ayurvedic texts, including yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. All these are eight parts of yoga, which have their own special significance.

Yoga rules and their benefits

The rules include non-violence, satya, asteya, brahmacharya and aparigraha. By following these, a person can establish harmony, brotherhood and peace, thereby freeing him from negative emotions like anger, greed and attachment. In today’s competitive era, mental disorders like jealousy, envy and ego are on the rise. By following Yama, mental disorders can be avoided.

Defecation, contentment, penance, self-study and worship of God, these are the five rules. These rules not only help in following virtue but also pave the way for self-purification. This develops satvik qualities and destroys rajasic and tamasic tendencies.

Pranayama
Controlling the speed of breathing when the asana is stable is called pranayama. It mainly consists of three movements: ‘Poorak’ (inhalation), ‘Kumbhaka’ (retention of breath), and ‘Rechak’ (exhalation), which are performed in the ratio of 1:4:2. This strengthens the nervous system and increases memory.

Pratyahara means turning the senses away from objects. It imitates the nature of the mind. By following Pratyahara, a person can become free from vices like lust, anger, pride, greed and ego, which paves the way for spiritual practice.
