PV Sindhu has faced defeat in the semi-finals of the Australian Open Super 500 badminton tournament. With this defeat, Sindhu’s dream of ending the title drought has been shattered. Double Olympic medalist Sindhu was seeded third in the Australian Open but she faced the challenge of top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, whom she could not overcome and her wait for the BWF title continued.

Tough competition in the first game

Former world number 1 Sindhu gave a tough fight to Yamaguchi in the first game but she lost to the world number 3 20-22, 12-21 in a match that lasted 43 minutes. With Sindhu’s exit, India’s campaign in this BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament also ended.

Sindhu faced every shot of Yamaguchi boldly in the first game. Both players scored six consecutive points each but Sindhu failed to convert her game points into points. Yamaguchi maintained his composure and won the first game.

Yamaguchi’s one-sided victory in the second game

In the second game, Yamaguchi showed aggressive behavior and scored eight consecutive points to take a 13-6 lead and easily won the match by maintaining his dominance throughout the game. Now Yamaguchi will face Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in the women’s singles title match. Sindhu’s recent struggle against Yamaguchi continued with this defeat. Although the Indian players are still ahead by 15-13 in the winning record, they have faced defeat in five of the last six matches.

Sindhu has not won a BWF Tour title since her victory at the Syed Modi International in December 2024. This was Sindhu’s second semi-final this season. Earlier, she had reached the semi-finals of Malaysia Open, in which she had to face defeat from Wang Ziyi of China. She has also reached the quarter-finals three times this season.
