India opener Rohit Sharma had this pretty clear injury scare during the first ODI vs Afghanistan in Dharamsala, and it made fans get nervous , and the team side too. Rohit, as you’d expect, is a big cog for India, and it looked like trouble when he was hit on his right wrist while batting during India’s chase. He had to get medical help pretty much right there, on the field.
And it arrives at a not so chill moment either, because India already started mapping things out for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Since Rohit is still one of the most crucial players around, any worry about his fitness or injury is going to pull eyeballs, a lot, from everywhere.
Rohit hit on wrist during India’s chase
This happened on the first legal delivery of India’s innings. Afghanistan fast bowler Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a short one, it climbed sharply after pitching, and Rohit tried to go for a pull shot. But the bounce surprised him a bit, and then, rather than proper contact, he got struck on his right wrist.
The moment looked nasty , and Rohit immediately dropped his bat and seemed uneasy. Teammates near him caught it fast, you could tell they realized something wasn’t right.
India’s physio then rushed in, checked him on spot, and the medical staff treated the area, they sprayed the wrist to lessen the discomfort. After that a strap was applied too, to give support and protection.
Even with the pain, Rohit decided to stay on. He stayed at the crease and showed that stubborn determination type of mindset , like he wanted to carry on with the chase. There were moments where he looked a bit off, but he refused to step away and tried to keep India’s start steady.
This newest injury worry also comes just days after another similar scare during training. Before the Afghanistan series, Rohit was reportedly struck on the finger while practicing , by a delivery from Prasidh Krishna. The good part is he recovered in time, so he was still available for selection.

Fitness questions continue ahead of 2027 World Cup
Rohit’s fitness has been brought up quite often in the last few months. In IPL 2026, he suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Mumbai Indians. That injury meant he missed five matches, and it also stirred doubts about whether he’d be ready for India’s international schedule.
Sure, he cleared fitness tests and came back to action, but the repeated little scare type moments have restarted the same conversations about his longer-term availability. And with India already missing Virat Kohli, Rohit’s fitness matters even more for the team’s plans.
Still, there was a positive highlight in the same match too. Even while dealing with the wrist issue, Rohit reached a major career milestone. He became the first Indian opener to score 16,000 international runs across all formats.
That puts him ahead of former opener Virender Sehwag, who ended with 15,758 international runs as an opener. And after that, Sachin Tendulkar follows with 15,335 runs at the top order.
So yeah, the record again underlined Rohit’s big contribution to Indian cricket over time. But the main thing people keep talking about is still his fitness. As India moves toward future challenges and starts its road to the 2027 World Cup, the hope is that this wrist problem ends up being just a minor bump, and that their senior opener stays available for whatever comes next.
