As Argentina prepare to defend their World Cup title, the Albiceleste are once more considered among the leading contenders in North America this summer.
Once again, Lionel Messi will lead the side, marking his sixth appearance at the World Cup. Despite his advancing years, his influence over the national team remains as commanding as ever.
Turning 39 during the group stage of this tournament, this edition is expected to be Messi’s final World Cup. While some continue to question how long the Inter Miami superstar can sustain his top-level performances, one of Argentina’s most respected former captains insists that Messi will play a crucial role in their title defence.
Argentina’s triumph in Qatar four years ago was defined by Messi finally claiming the World Cup medal that had long eluded him throughout his illustrious career.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s place among football’s all-time legends is already secure, yet if he manages to guide Argentina to another World Cup crown, it would elevate his legacy even further.
Javier Zanetti, who earned 145 caps for Argentina during a career that spanned the years between their second and third world titles, believes that retaining the trophy will be a formidable challenge for his country.
“It will not be easy, even though we have some exceptional young players coming through,” Zanetti told FourFourTwo.
However, the former Inter Milan icon insists that Argentina’s hopes remain strong thanks to their inspirational captain. “I am convinced that with Messi, Argentina will again be a major contender for this World Cup,” he said.
“He is still fully capable of leading the team – he is intelligent, he understands better than anyone what the squad requires, and he is surrounded by an immensely talented group of players in the national setup.”
The supporting cast around Messi will be key if Argentina are to repeat their success, just as they were instrumental in Qatar.
As Messi prepares for what could be his final appearance on the global stage, Zanetti hopes that the legendary forward will take the time to appreciate every moment on the pitch.
“Now is the time for Messi to enjoy his football. The most important thing is that he continues to take pleasure in what he does,” Zanetti concluded.
