Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Manchester City’s goalkeeper James Trafford, marking a renewed effort by Eddie Howe to strengthen his goalkeeping department. The Magpies, who narrowly missed signing the England international last summer, are now considering another approach as Trafford’s limited opportunities at the Etihad Stadium have reopened the possibility of a move.
Newcastle revisit long-standing target
As reported by The Athletic, Newcastle have reopened communication with Manchester City to express their intent to bring Trafford to Tyneside. The 23-year-old joined City from Burnley on a five-year deal last summer after Newcastle lost out in the previous transfer battle. However, following just 17 appearances in the last campaign, Trafford is now open to exploring a transfer, prompting Newcastle to renew their pursuit as they aim to reinforce their senior goalkeeping ranks.
Frustration grows for Trafford
Trafford’s move to Manchester City was made under the impression that he would quickly become Pep Guardiola’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, his progress was disrupted when the Premier League champions unexpectedly secured the services of Gianluigi Donnarumma, pushing Trafford down the pecking order. Frustrated by the situation, the Englishman is unwilling to make an immediate decision about his club future. Instead, he plans to discuss his next steps with his agents once he concludes his international duties.
Overhaul at St James’ Park
Manager Eddie Howe is in the midst of restructuring Newcastle’s defensive setup. The club has already added 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from Reims following the end of Aaron Ramsdale’s loan spell. The arrival of a seasoned goalkeeper such as Trafford could spell the end for current first-choice stopper Nick Pope, who is likely to move on should another established number one be signed. However, formal discussions between Newcastle and City are yet to commence as Trafford remains occupied with international commitments.
International duty delays negotiations
Trafford is currently in the United States as one of three goalkeepers selected by Thomas Tuchel for England’s World Cup squad. While his focus remains on supporting teammates Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson, Newcastle are under pressure to finalise their goalkeeping plans ahead of the 2026-27 season. Howe is keen to have all defensive signings in place before pre-season training begins, meaning any extended delay in Trafford’s decision could see the Magpies turning their attention to alternative targets.
