Tezzbuzz Desk- Electricity consumers of Delhi may soon get the shock of increased bills. According to reports, there is a possibility of increase in electricity rates in the capital ranging from 1 percent to 3.30 percent. However, this increase will not apply equally to all consumers.

According to the information, domestic consumers consuming electricity between 0 to 200 units and 200 to 400 units are likely to get relief at present. This increase will not have any major impact on the bills of these categories of consumers. But consumers who consume more than 500 units of electricity may have to face its direct impact and may see an increase in their monthly bills.

According to the information released by the power companies, the PPAC charge on BRPL supplying in West, Central and South Delhi has been increased by 17.94 percent. At the same time, orders have been given to increase the PPAC charge by 17.43 percent on BYPL, which supplies electricity in the Trans Yamuna region, and by about 16 percent on TPDDL, which supplies electricity in North and Outer Delhi.

These new rates have been implemented from June 10 and its effect will be visible in the electricity bills in July. This means that the upcoming bills may seem heavier to consumers than before.

Meanwhile, business organizations have expressed concern over this decision. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has said that the increase in electricity rates will put additional economic burden on Delhi’s shopkeepers and industries. The organization believes that commercial electricity tariffs in Delhi are already 15 to 20 percent higher than those in neighboring states Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

CTI has also warned that if the same situation continues, many small and medium industries may shift out of Delhi to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, which may affect the industrial activities of the capital.

At present, there is an atmosphere of concern among consumers regarding the proposed increase in electricity rates and all eyes are fixed on the upcoming billing cycle.
