Barcelona are reportedly eyeing Colorado Rapids’ rising Australian international Lucas Herrington, who has quickly become one of Major League Soccer’s standout young players this season.

At just 18 years old, Herrington has made a significant impact as a central defender for the Colorado Rapids, earning widespread praise for his solid performances. His impressive displays have not only caught the attention of La Liga champions Barcelona but have also secured him a place in Australia’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Emerging talent

Herrington is already considered among the most promising young players in Major League Soccer. This season, he has contributed one goal and one assist in 15 league matches. According to journalist Tom Bogert, several clubs are keeping tabs on the teenager, with Barcelona being the most prominent name linked to him. The Colorado Rapids, however, declined to comment on the speculation when approached.

Australia’s World Cup plans

Herrington’s stellar performances in the MLS have also drawn recognition from the Football Australia authorities. He has been named in the Socceroos’ World Cup squad and could make his tournament debut as early as Saturday when Australia take on Türkiye.

If Herrington moves on from the Rapids, he would become the second key defender in recent years to be discovered and developed by the club’s scouting system before being transferred for a profit. In 2024, the Rapids sold former first-round draft pick and centre-back Moise Bombito to OGC Nice for a reported initial fee of $7.7 million.
