She recalled that the experience unfolded around Christmas, at a time when she was already physically unwell and emotionally overwhelmed. “A couple years ago, I got really sick around Christmas time. My family was in town. My dad, my mom, my cousin, everybody,” she said.
Her family was gathered around her, and she ended up watching the film with her father, David, who she noted is not usually someone who sits down to watch movies. That detail, she explained, made the moment feel even more unexpected and unplanned.
The film itself tells the true story of a woman navigating life after her husband disappears during Brazil’s military dictatorship. It is a story built around absence, grief, and the emotional weight of unanswered questions, and Lopez admitted that it struck her in a way she was not prepared for.
As she watched, something inside her began to unravel. “This woman spends her whole life trying to prove that her husband was really — that he didn’t just disappear,” she said. “My dad was sitting there and something happened in my head and I just started crying.”
She explained that the tears were not only about the film itself but about everything she had been carrying at the time. “At the time, I was going through a divorce and thinking a lot about my kids,” she added. “I started calculating all of the things with my kids, my experience with my dad, like everything happened just all at once.”
What followed, she said, became a quietly defining moment between her and her father. When he noticed her emotional state and asked what was wrong, she simply told him, “Dads are so important.” Her father then responded by holding her face and saying, “I love you. I always loved you.” Lopez described it as a moment that changed something fundamental in her.
It was not a dramatic turning point in the cinematic sense, but something quieter and more personal. She later reflected that the moment helped heal something inside her that needed healing, allowing her to move forward from that chapter of her life.
