Instagram has introduced a new 'Your Algorithm' feature. Users can now control the algorithm by selecting topics of interest, ensuring that content they prefer appears more frequently in their feeds and the 'Explore' section.

A common complaint among social media users is that they are shown content determined by the platform's algorithm rather than what they actually wish to see. Instagram is now taking a significant step to address this issue. The company has launched a feature that allows users to directly inform the algorithm about the type of content they like. This will make the content displayed in Instagram feeds, 'Explore', and other sections more personalized and aligned with user preferences.

What is Instagram’s new ‘Your Algorithm’ feature?

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri has announced the new ‘Your Algorithm’ feature. The goal is to give users greater control over their content experience. Through this feature, users can view and edit the topics they are interested in. In other words, the algorithm will no longer rely solely on observing your activity to make assumptions; instead, you can explicitly tell it what you like.

According to the company, the feature is currently limited to topic customization, but future updates could include preferences regarding people, content types, moods, and other categories.

Users will now decide what they see

Until now, Instagram’s system operated based on which posts users viewed, clicked on, and shared. The algorithm generated new recommendations using this data. However, users often found themselves repeatedly seeing content that did not interest them.

With the introduction of this new feature, users can directly update their preferences and interests. This will reduce unwanted content in the feed and increase the visibility of posts related to their preferred topics.

Why was there unease regarding the algorithm?

Adam Mosseri acknowledges that algorithmic recommendation is a major technological achievement, but notes that it reduces user control. The platform learns what a user is viewing, yet the user cannot directly articulate exactly what they wish to see.

This is why many people feel uneasy about algorithm-based recommendations on social media platforms. The new feature is seen as an attempt to bridge this gap.

Made possible by AI and LLMs

According to Mosseri, the ranking models used previously were too complex for the average user to easily comprehend. However, with the help of Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI technology, Instagram can now explain various content categories in language that is easily understood by people.

The changing future of social media

Experts believe that in the future, social media platforms will work towards giving users greater control. Instagram's move is considered part of this shift. If this feature proves successful, it could completely transform the way content is discovered on social media, offering users a more relevant and personalized experience.
