Manchester United have reportedly distanced themselves from speculation linking them with Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, as the club’s defensive plans for the upcoming season become more defined. According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, United are not preparing any formal offer for the Argentine defender, despite recent rumours suggesting otherwise.
Although United remain focused on strengthening their backline, the club appears unlikely to commit a major transfer fee to secure an experienced Premier League centre-back like Romero. This approach aligns with the more disciplined and data-driven recruitment strategy being implemented under the stewardship of INEOS.
Why a move for Romero was always improbable
Some earlier reports, including those cited by The Sun, indicated that United were exploring the idea of reuniting Romero with his Argentina teammate Lisandro Martinez at Old Trafford. On paper, the partnership seemed appealing given their chemistry at the international level.
However, several significant hurdles stood in the way. Tottenham would be reluctant to part with their captain, especially to a direct Premier League rival. Furthermore, the North London club only tied Romero down to a new long-term contract last year, strengthening their stance in any potential negotiations.
From United’s perspective, pursuing Romero does not appear to be a pressing concern. The club already boasts multiple central defensive options, including Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, and other squad players capable of filling the role. Unless there are major departures, allocating substantial funds to that position would be difficult to justify.
A pragmatic call from Manchester United
It seems a wise decision for United to steer clear of this particular transfer speculation. The club’s history includes several high-profile defensive signings that have not always delivered the desired long-term stability.
There is no doubt that Romero is a quality defender — aggressive, composed, and proven at Premier League level. Yet, given his cost, Tottenham’s position, and United’s current squad depth, this potential move feels more sensational than realistic.
At present, this rumour appears to be one of those transfer stories that generate buzz but lack genuine substance behind them. United’s focus instead seems to be on making measured, strategic decisions that align with their broader rebuilding efforts ahead of the next campaign.
