LPG Subsidized Cylinder: Along with petrol-diesel prices, LPG cylinder prices have also increased recently. The main reason for this is shortage of air and oil. Due to this, the government has also changed some of its schemes. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has given an important clarification regarding the reduction in the number of subsidy cylinders. On Wednesday, he clarified why the decision was taken to reduce the number of subsidized cylinders under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY) from nine to four per year. It was taken due to their misuse by some beneficiaries.

Union Minister Puri told ‘IANS’ that the decision was taken due to their misuse by some beneficiaries. It was based on evidence which showed that many beneficiaries did not need additional cylinders and some cylinders were being used for commercial purposes.

The minister explained the rationale behind the decision

The Union minister said, “We have reduced the number of cylinders available under the Ujjwala scheme from nine to four. There is a lot of discussion. But if you don’t need more than four cylinders, why should you need extra cylinders?” He argued that if a family does not need more than four cylinders a year, there is no compelling reason to give them more subsidized refills. He also gave the following reasons for this decision:
Puri explained that the government took this step after receiving reliable information that many Ujjwala beneficiaries did not actually need these cylinders.
These beneficiaries would take the cylinders and use them for commercial purposes, use them elsewhere or resell them at a higher price.
He mentioned that the government took this decision after analyzing how the scheme was being used and after incidents of misuse were noticed.

Scheme launched in 2016

‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ was launched with the aim of providing clean cooking fuel to economically weaker households by providing LPG connections and refills at subsidized rates. This scheme was implemented in 2016. Initially, under this scheme, 12 cylinders were given per year. Last year this number was reduced to 9. Now this number is 4.
