Bruno Fernandes scored the winning goal as Portugal defeated Chile 2-1 in a World Cup warm-up match.
The Manchester United midfielder continued his excellent club form with the national team, scoring Portugal’s second goal after Goncalo Guedes, who came on as a substitute for Cristiano Ronaldo, had opened the scoring.
Lucas Cepeda’s late goal was little more than a consolation for Chile, who did not qualify for this summer’s tournament in North America.
The pre-tournament friendly saw both teams reduced to 10 men before half-time, as Rafael Leao and Ivan Ramon were shown red cards following an unnecessary scuffle near the touchline.
However, the match ended with Fernandes proving to be the difference-maker, highlighting the major role he will play in Portugal’s challenge this summer. The 31-year-old arrives at the World Cup after the best club season of his career, during which he broke the Premier League’s single-season assist record (21).
That achievement earned him the Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Footballer of the Year awards, along with a record fifth Manchester United Player of the Season award. He is also the leading candidate to win the PFA Player of the Year award, which will be announced in August.
