Parma Ekadashi fast story
Once upon a time, a Brahmin named Sumedha lived with his wife in the city of Kampilya. He was very kind but he was facing financial difficulties. Both husband and wife were living their lives in extreme poverty. The Brahmin used to collect food for himself by begging from others. At the same time, the Brahmin’s wife used to respect her husband and the guests who came to the house. Whenever a guest came to the house, she would feed the guest despite being hungry herself.
One day a Brahmin went to beg for alms but people refused to give him alms. After this he thought that instead of begging, he should go abroad, so that he could earn money by doing some work. He said to his wife, ‘O dear, a household cannot run without money. If you agree, I should go abroad and do some work so that I can earn some money. Many scholars have also appreciated the work and hard work.
On this the Brahmin’s wife said, ‘A man gets the fruits of his deeds in his previous birth. Even if you live on Sumeru mountain, you do not get gold without virtuous deeds. The person who donates knowledge and land in his previous life gets knowledge and land in his next life. Overall, whatever God has written in destiny cannot be avoided. Because of this, we get the results of whatever work we do.
After this the Brahmin’s wife said that it was not right to leave him alone and go abroad. This conversation was overheard by a sage, who praised Sumedha Brahmin. The husband and wife honored the sage and served him food. Then the sage told the couple that by observing fast on Parama Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Malmas, sorrow and poverty goes away. Following the advice of the sage, both of them observed the fast of Parama Ekadashi. With its effect, all his problems went away and he became rich.
