The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday (June 9) conducted an investigation at the party headquarters and the office of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the alleged fake signature case going on within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. The political atmosphere heated up after this action and the TMC leadership termed it an act of political vendetta.
A CID team reached 30B Harish Chatterjee Street in Kalighat, Kolkata, which is the residence of Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and also the party’s central office. Kalighat police station and a large number of women policemen were also present along with the officers. Meanwhile, another team of CID also reached Abhishek Banerjee’s office located on Camack Street.
According to sources, initially the security personnel did not allow the investigation team to enter the premises due to Abhishek Banerjee’s absence. Abhishek Banerjee is currently present in New Delhi with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Later CID officials arrived with additional police force and entered the premises. According to officials, during this period there was also mild protest from the security personnel.
This action follows notices issued a few days ago, seeking information regarding alleged fake signatures of TMC MLAs on a resolution submitted to the Assembly Speaker. This proposal is said to be to the recognition of the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.
According to CID officials, the earlier reply sent by Abhishek Banerjee had said that the signatures concerned were collected at the office located at Harish Chatterjee Street. On the basis of this information, the investigating agency reached there and investigated the documents and other facts.

The signature forgery case has already exposed divisions within the party. Now after this action of CID, a new controversy has arisen in the politics of West Bengal and the political conflict on this matter is expected to intensify in the coming days.
