Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, addressing a gathering of women’s self-help groups in Hyderabad as part of the ‘Praja Palana – Pragathi Pranalika’ initiative, announced his commitment to developing one crore women as ‘Millionaires’ following the distribution of 553 buses to women members.
In his speech, Reddy emphasized the crucial role of women in achieving the economic goals set by the government. He stated, “We are undeterred by the conspiracies and striving to make one crore women as ‘crorepatis’ (millionaires). I am taking this responsibility for women’s economic empowerment. With the blessing of women, we will continue to run this government until 2034.”
The Chief Minister referenced India’s cultural respect for women, invoking Goddess Lakshmi, Mother Earth, Mother India, and Mother Telangana. He also honored figures such as Chakali Ailamma, Arutla Kamaladevi, and Mallu Swarajyam for their contributions.
Reddy credited former Prime Minister Nehru and the Congress party for granting women voting rights and opportunities to serve as Presidents and Ministers. He criticized the previous BRS government for not including any women ministers during K Chandrashekhar Rao’s first five years in office and highlighted the failure of the BJP to appoint a woman as national President.
Regarding financial support, the Chief Minister noted, “The KCR government also failed to disburse the zero-interest loans to women. The People’s government sanctioned zero-interest loans soon after assuming office in the state. Women have excelled in roles such as ministers, corporation chairpersons, municipal chairpersons, and mayors during the Congress rule.”
He also mentioned that Sonia Gandhi introduced a bill in Parliament in 2013 to provide reservations for women in legislative bodies and expressed confidence that women will play a pivotal political role by securing 33 percent representation in such bodies in the future.
Addressing opposition criticism, Reddy remarked, “The opposition took to the streets demanding the cancellation of the free bus scheme. Despite hurdles, we are continuing the free bus travel facility without backing down. Women are using the free bus service to pursue higher education.”
The Chief Minister outlined government initiatives for women’s empowerment, including entrusting women’s self-help groups with stitching school uniforms, operating petrol bunks, and establishing solar power generation plants competitive with Adani’s. He added that ‘Indira Mahila Shakti’ buildings are being constructed to rival corporate offices.
Highlighting economic opportunities, Reddy noted, “106 stalls were set up in Hitech City to market products made by self-help groups. Self-help group products are also being sold on online platforms Amazon and Flipkart. Today is an auspicious day, on which the rain god showered on us soon after the launch of 553 buses.”
Finally, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of crop diversification and agricultural awareness, stating that priority must be given to all types of crops and educating farmers accordingly.
