A 41-year-old woman was gang-raped by 10 people in a horror attack in India, according to reports. Officials in Karnataka, southwest India, arrested 10 people in connection with the incident this week. The alleged assault took place on June 3 in a village in the Davangere region, although it remained unreported until June 8. It was then that a video of the assault was circulated in several WhatsApp groups, the Times of India reports.
The victim filed a complaint with police, and officers subsequently arrested all 10 people she had named. The 41-year-old said she had left home after a domestic dispute and was walking towards her parents' village when she was approached by two men, who claimed they wanted to help her.
They then allegedly gave her a soft drink suspected to contain a sedative, after which she lost consciousness.
Police said the woman was then taken to a farm on the village outskirts, where other men had gathered.
The victim alleged that she was then sexually assaulted and filmed in her intoxicated state.
Police filed a case under Sections 70 (gang rape), 77 (voyeurism) and 190 (every member of an unlawful assembly guilty of an offence committed in pursuit of a common object) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Davengere Superintendent said.
He added: "We have secured all 10 accused in the case. Further investigation is underway."
Police said the suspect's mobile phones had been seized to trace the video's circulation.
A spokesperson for the force added that the victim underwent a medical examination as part of the investigation, with the crime scene also examined for forensic evidence and to determine the sequence of events.
