Business Desk – LPG New Price Today: Amidst inflation, the government has made a big change for LPG consumers, especially the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). The central government has reduced the number of subsidized LPG cylinders available under the Ujjwala scheme. Now beneficiaries will get subsidy only on 4 cylinders instead of 9 in a year. However, the subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder will continue.
With this decision, the prices of domestic LPG cylinders have increased recently. Oil marketing companies have increased the price of 14.2 kg domestic gas cylinder by Rs 29.
What changed regarding subsidy?
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme will now get a subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder only on 4 cylinders annually. Earlier this number was 9. The government says that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the average gas consumption of the beneficiaries. The subsidy amount will be sent directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries as before.
How much will Ujjwala beneficiaries get the cylinder?
The price of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi has increased to Rs 942. After the beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme get subsidy of Rs 300, its effective price will be Rs 642.
New rates of domestic LPG in major cities
After the recent revision, domestic LPG cylinder prices vary in different cities depending on local taxes and transportation costs. The price in Delhi is Rs 942, while in other metros also the rates vary depending on local taxes. Consumers are advised to confirm the latest price from their local distributor before booking the cylinder.
Why did the government take this decision?
The government says that most of the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme use only about four cylinders a year on an average. Keeping this consumption pattern in mind, it has been decided to reduce the number of subsidized cylinders. However, financial assistance of Rs 300 per cylinder will continue.
What is Ujjwala Yojana?
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was started in the year 2016 with the aim of providing clean fuel to women from economically weaker families. Under the scheme, eligible women are given LPG connections and the government also provides subsidy from time to time. Information about eligibility rules and other services to the scheme is available on the official portal.
What does it mean for consumers?
After the new rules, Ujjwala beneficiaries will continue to get subsidy, but now this benefit will be limited to only four cylinders. After this, consumers will have to pay the full market price for additional cylinders purchased. Also, the recent price increase may also impact the household kitchen budget.
