Liverpool’s determined attempt to sign Hertha BSC’s young sensation Kennet Eichhorn has ended in disappointment. The talented teenager has officially declined a lucrative move to Anfield, choosing instead to focus on his continued growth in German football. His decision has now sparked an intense tug-of-war between Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig as both clubs vie to secure his services before the transfer window closes.

Kennet Eichhorn turns down Liverpool’s Anfield opportunity

As reported by Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool’s high-profile pursuit of the promising Hertha BSC youngster has fallen through. The Merseyside club had dedicated considerable time and effort into completing the deal, but Plettenberg confirmed the breakdown, saying: “EXCL | Rejection in the last hours: Despite Liverpool’s intensive efforts, Hertha BSC gem Kennet Eichhorn will not join the Reds.”

The Premier League giants had created a compelling pitch to bring the 16-year-old to Anfield as part of their long-term youth project. However, Eichhorn has opted for a different path centred on his immediate development, effectively ending Liverpool’s hopes of wrapping up the summer transfer.

Financial appeal not sufficient

Liverpool reportedly tabled a highly attractive offer to lure the teenager away from Germany. Plettenberg elaborated on the situation, noting: “The 16 y/o has decided against a move to England, even though Liverpool’s offer was the most attractive at first glance - both financially and in terms of the club’s stature.”

He further highlighted the strength of the bid compared to other interested teams, adding: “The offer from Liverpool was higher than those of all German clubs competing for Eichhorn.” Despite the considerable financial benefits and the global prestige associated with Liverpool, the young midfielder prioritised his sporting stability and comfort in familiar surroundings.

Leverkusen and Leipzig chase €20 million prospect

With the English option now ruled out, the focus has shifted to a domestic battle for the 16-year-old attacking midfielder, who carries an impressive market valuation of €20 million (£17m/$23m). On the subject of local interest, Plettenberg stated: “Eichhorn wants to stay in Germany. Leverkusen are pushing hard for a permanent deal as revealed last night. Leipzig remain hopeful.”

The strong pursuit from both Bundesliga powerhouses is well justified given Eichhorn’s performances. Across all competitions, he has made 20 appearances and scored two goals in 1,358 minutes of play. His tally includes 17 matches in the 2. Bundesliga, two appearances in the DFB-Pokal, and one outing in the U19 Nachwuchsliga.

What’s next for Liverpool

Looking ahead, Eichhorn is expected to complete his move within Germany soon, with Bayer Leverkusen currently leading the race to finalise the €20 million deal. Meanwhile, Liverpool will need to quickly refocus their recruitment plans, identifying new young talents to strengthen their academy setup and maintain their long-term player development strategy.
