According to new reports, Mason Greenwood has given the green signal for a transfer to Serie A powerhouse AS Roma, marking a development that could bring significant financial benefits for Manchester United.
Having risen through Manchester United’s academy, Greenwood was once seen as a future star for the club. However, he left the Premier League side permanently in 2024 to join Marseille.
In early 2022, Manchester United suspended Greenwood after he was charged with attempted rape and assault. About a year later, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case after key witnesses withdrew, concluding that there was no realistic chance of securing a conviction.
Despite this, Manchester United decided to part ways with Greenwood before his return to competitive football in the 2023/24 season, as allowing him back could have led to a major public relations controversy for the club.
Greenwood then joined La Liga side Getafe on loan for the 2023/24 season, where he impressed with his performances. Subsequently, he moved to Marseille for a reported fee of around £26 million ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. Notably, Manchester United included a 50% sell-on clause in that deal.
During his two seasons with Marseille, Greenwood scored 48 goals in 81 appearances. However, reports have surfaced about internal conflicts involving him, and speculation about a summer exit has grown stronger.
Over the weekend, one of Fenerbahce’s presidential candidates publicly claimed that they had reached an agreement to sign Greenwood. However, it now appears that the forward prefers a switch to AS Roma.
As per Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, Greenwood has approved a move to Roma and has already bid farewell to Marseille. The report adds that both parties have reached a basic understanding regarding salary, and the player and club are eager to finalise the deal swiftly following Roma’s intervention.
Discussing the potential transfer fee, the report states: “Marseille value Greenwood at €55 million including bonuses, while the player is seeking a top-tier salary. The total package, including wages, could amount to an investment of around €100 million gross over five years. Roma’s initial proposal is expected to be cautious yet substantial, offering approximately €40 million including bonuses. Though this may fall short, it reaffirms that Roma’s interest is genuine.”
If Greenwood’s transfer is completed for €55 million (approximately £47 million), Manchester United would stand to earn an additional £23.5 million due to their sell-on clause. Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has also explained the significant impact this deal could have for the Red Devils.
Romano said: “The Mason Greenwood situation directly affects Manchester United. As I’ve mentioned on my YouTube channel, United have been closely monitoring developments because of the large sell-on clause they included in the Marseille deal.”
He continued: “It’s not 5%, 7%, or even 10% — it’s much higher than that. So Manchester United are keeping a close eye on this, as Greenwood’s departure from Olympique Marseille for a substantial fee could bring in considerable funds this summer.”
Romano concluded: “We’ll have to see how things unfold, both with Fenerbahce’s elections and with Marseille’s stance on the matter.”
