iOS 27 performance upgrades: AirDrop up to 80% faster, Photos 70% quicker and more

Apple used a significant portion of its WWDC 2026 keynote to highlight performance improvements in iOS 27 that go beyond AI features, announcing speed boosts across several of the most frequently used functions on an iPhone.

AirDrop transfers, Mail loading, and Apple Music playback are all getting speed improvements of up to 80%, while photos will appear in the camera roll up to 70% faster after being taken. Network switching from Wi-Fi to cellular is also getting faster, reducing the lag that users experience when walking out of a building or moving between coverage zones.

Why performance upgrades matter as much as features

In an era where every major software announcement leads with AI capabilities, Apple’s decision to call out concrete percentage improvements in everyday functions is a deliberate signal to the hundreds of millions of iPhone users who may not use Siri AI daily but do use AirDrop, Mail, and the camera roll constantly.

An 80% improvement in AirDrop speed is not a marginal refinement. For anyone who regularly transfers files, photos, or documents between Apple devices, it represents a fundamentally different and noticeably faster experience. The same applies to Mail loading, where inbox rendering speed directly affects how quickly users can get to and act on messages, and to Apple Music playback initiation, where even a second of delay creates friction in a daily behaviour.

The 70% improvement in camera roll photo loading is particularly relevant given the AI photo editing features also announced in iOS 27, Extend, Enhance, and Reframe. Faster photo loading means users get to the editing surface more quickly, making the new AI tools feel more responsive and integrated rather than something that requires waiting.

The Wi-Fi to cellular switching improvement addresses one of the more quietly frustrating aspects of iPhone network management, the dead zone that often occurs when a device is technically connected to a Wi-Fi network it can no longer reach but has not yet switched to cellular. Faster handover means fewer moments where a video call freezes or a message fails to send during a transition.

Taken together, the performance improvements represent Apple’s argument that iOS 27 is not only adding new capabilities but making the existing ones meaningfully better for every user on every supported device, including the 30-plus iPhone models confirmed for the update going back to the iPhone 11.
