Before Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, another fantasy drama caught the attention of the audience. The show was ‘Vikram Aur Betaal’, which aired on Doordarshan in 1985 and quickly became a beloved program on Indian television.
The popularity of this show was so much that viewers of all ages waited for new episodes every week. The weekend seemed incomplete without it.

The show was based on the collection of Indian folklore ‘Baital Pachisi’, which told interesting stories between King Vikramaditya and the mysterious spirit Betal. In every episode, Betal would tell a new story, which would end with a moral dilemma.
Betal challenged King Vikram on one condition: he had to listen to the story completely silently. But when the king answers Betal’s question, Betal runs away, causing Vikram to chase him again.
Amazing cast of the show
In this show, Arun Govil played the role of King Vikramaditya, while Sajjan Lal Purohit played the role of Betal. Apart from this, actors like Arvind Trivedi, Deepika Chikhalia, Vijay Arora, Sunil Lahiri, Lilliput and Sameer Rajda also gave stellar performances.

‘Vikram Aur Betaal’, which aired every Sunday evening from 1985 to 1986, is one of Doordarshan’s most beloved classics. Even today, the show’s memorable stories and moral lessons remain fresh in the hearts of viewers who experienced the golden days of Indian television.
