Manchester United are intensifying their chase for Mateus Fernandes, even though West Ham United have increased their valuation of the talented midfielder, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils are focusing on a major overhaul in the midfield this summer, with a significant portion of their transfer budget set aside to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad. With Casemiro’s exit already confirmed and Manuel Ugarte expected to follow him, United are preparing to bring in at least two—possibly three, if the 25-year-old Uruguayan is sold—new midfield additions to Old Trafford.
A £39 million deal for Atalanta’s powerhouse Ederson has already been agreed upon, though the finalisation might be delayed due to the Brazilian’s late call-up to his nation’s World Cup squad. The 26-year-old is a dynamic presence capable of operating in multiple roles and systems, and he has received full backing from Carrick during discussions with sporting director Jason Wilcox and the recruitment team.
Next on United’s list is Fernandes, West Ham’s 21-year-old breakout talent, who enjoyed a brilliant season that has drawn attention from several top European clubs.
Among his admirers are Champions League finalists Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, while Real Madrid have also shown interest. Incoming Real boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on the Portuguese youngster, as the ‘Special One’ aims to rebuild his side with youthful and ambitious players at the Bernabeu.
According to Romano, INEOS held discussions with Fernandes’ representatives this week to gauge the feasibility of a transfer. He revealed, “Manchester United are in direct conversations with the agents of Mateus Fernandes. [They] have made contact over the last 48 hours to begin talks about the possible cost of the deal, including transfer fee and salary.”
Fernandes is said to be open to a move to Old Trafford, viewing it as a dream opportunity and idolising club captain Bruno Fernandes. The skipper has reportedly recommended his compatriot to the club’s hierarchy. The 21-year-old appears inclined towards United despite rival offers, with increased first-team opportunities being a decisive factor.
However, West Ham are holding firm on their valuation of their prized asset. Following their relegation last season, the east London club need to generate funds, and Fernandes remains their most valuable player. Additionally, Southampton—who sold him to West Ham last year for £42 million—are entitled to 15% of any future sale.
This situation has led the Hammers to raise their asking price despite their drop to the Championship. Initial reports suggested they wanted £80 million, but Romano now claims the figure has climbed to £85 million amid growing interest from both English and European clubs.
Romano stated, “Understand Matheus Fernandes price tag has been fixed by West Ham in a meeting with his camp: £85m. Manchester United in contact with player side, more clubs also attentive and keen.”
Fernandes’ profile—a young, adaptable midfielder boasting both physical strength and technical finesse, along with proven Premier League experience—perfectly fits the criteria INEOS are targeting this summer.
However, an £85 million investment for a 21-year-old who has experienced successive relegations (Southampton the previous year and West Ham this season) appears steep, even for United, who are prepared to spend heavily and compete with Europe’s elite such as Real Madrid.
Had West Ham avoided relegation, their stance in negotiations would have been stronger and the valuation might have seemed more justified. Yet, as a Championship side in urgent need of funds, they may find it difficult to stand firm. United’s progress in talks suggests confidence within the club that West Ham will eventually soften their position.
