Shares of aviation- companies may remain in focus after three Air India narrowbody aircraft parked at Terminal 2 of Delhi International Airport were damaged when ground support equipment struck them during a spell of strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday.
According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), sudden adverse weather conditions caused ground support equipment belonging to Air India Engineering and IndiGo to move from their designated positions, resulting in collisions with parked aircraft.
The airport operator stated that all three affected Air India aircraft have been taken out of operation following the incident and are undergoing inspection and assessment.
DIAL also noted that Air Traffic Control (ATC) had not issued any warning regarding a change in weather conditions prior to the incident. The airport operator said the equipment was displaced due to the sudden onset of strong winds and rain.
While Air India declined to comment on the matter, sources indicated that aircraft belonging to other airlines may also have been impacted by the severe weather conditions.
The incident highlights the operational challenges posed by sudden weather disruptions at airports, particularly during the monsoon season, when strong winds can affect aircraft ground handling activities and airport operations.
Further details regarding the extent of the damage, repair timelines and any impact on flight schedules are awaited.
