A significant law enforcement operation is currently taking place in Covington County, Mississippi, following the shooting of a deputy on Monday afternoon near a supermarket in Mount Olive. This incident has led to the issuance of a Blue Alert for a suspect identified as 19-year-old Zykerian Quentavius Magee. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) describes Magee as a Black male, standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing around 185 pounds. He was last spotted on foot in the vicinity of the 200 block of South Bluff Road shortly after 3:30 p.m., dressed in a black hoodie and gray pants.

The shooting took place at Greer’s CashSaver supermarket, located at 406 Main Street in Mount Olive. Sheriff Joel Houston from Smith County confirmed that a deputy from Covington County was shot during this event. Reports indicate that the deputy sustained life-threatening injuries after being hit by gunfire above his protective vest and beneath his arm.

In response to the shooting, numerous local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies have converged on the scene. Witnesses reported to local media that there was a significant police presence, with one resident mentioning hearing gunfire from her home and later observing ambulances and police tape in the area. Authorities are also looking into sightings of an individual heading towards a wooded area near a residence shortly after the incident.

According to Sheriff Houston, both state and federal agencies are actively participating in the search for the suspect. The Lamar County Sheriff's Office has deployed its Special Response Team and K-9 units to aid in the manhunt, while the Jones County Sheriff's Department has dispatched deputies, investigators, and narcotics agents to the scene. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has also commented on the situation, urging the public to keep the injured deputy in their thoughts as law enforcement continues their search and investigation. As of Monday evening, no arrests had been made, and the search for Magee is still ongoing.
