The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 is almost here, and here’s a detailed look at everything you need to know about the continental football championship taking place in Ivory Coast.
The 34th edition of AFCON is officially underway, and football fans across the globe are gearing up for one of Africa’s biggest sporting events. The tournament, although titled AFCON 2023, is being played in early 2024 after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postponed it in July 2022 due to concerns over adverse summer weather conditions in the host nation.
Defending champions Senegal are aiming to retain their title, while their 2021 final rivals Egypt have already been eliminated in the round of 16.
Ivory Coast was confirmed as the host nation in January 2019. Initially, Cameroon was stripped of its 2019 hosting rights due to delays in infrastructure and preparation, but was later reassigned to host the 2021 event. This change pushed Ivory Coast’s hosting duties to 2023.
The tournament began on January 13 with the opening match between Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau, while the group stage wrapped up on January 24.
From there, 16 teams advanced to the knockout rounds, with the round of 16 played from January 27 to January 30. After a short break, the quarter-finals are scheduled for February 2 and 3.
The semi-finals will be held on February 7, followed by the grand final on February 11.
