Christian Eriksen has shared that he is “feeling good” after being discharged from hospital and returning home, just a day after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in his career.

The Danish midfielder was rushed to hospital following the incident during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine. The 34-year-old fell to the ground in the 65th minute, prompting immediate medical attention from staff on the field.

This latest collapse occurred five years after Eriksen had suffered a cardiac arrest during the European Championship. However, he clarified that this episode was not the same as the one he experienced in 2021.

Expressing gratitude to everyone who supported him, Eriksen confirmed that the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) placed in his chest had functioned exactly as intended. The ICD is a medical device that delivers an electric shock to the heart either to restart it if it stops beating or to restore a normal rhythm if irregularities are detected.

“I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family,” Eriksen said. “As you can imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has been a big moment for both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a completely different situation from what happened in 2021.

“I am feeling good, and my recovery has already begun. I am deeply thankful for the support and quick response of all the players and medical personnel on the pitch, as well as for the doctors who have looked after me and my heart over the years. Thanks to their skill and dedication, my ICD did precisely what it was meant to do — protect me when I needed it most.

“For now, my focus is on recovery, spending quality time with my family, taking a holiday, and playing football with my kids.”

Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Boesen, confirmed on Sunday that Eriksen had briefly lost consciousness during the incident. The match was subsequently stopped and called off.

A former player for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, Eriksen has represented Denmark in over 150 international matches.
