The German Football Association (DFB) has initiated formal proceedings in the matter concerning Laura Freigang.
According to a statement provided to SID on Tuesday, the DFB confirmed, “The DFB’s Anti-Doping Commission is currently reviewing all relevant facts and documents submitted, and will decide on the next course of action based on its assessment.”
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) announced last Friday that the German international and captain of the Frauen-Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt has registered three “strikes” within a 12-month period. NADA made the case public after Freigang failed to appear for doping control during the World Cup qualifier against Norway, which Germany won 2–0. Freigang, however, was not part of the squad for that match.
NADA described the incident as a “potential violation of anti-doping regulations” and referred the case to the DFB for disciplinary proceedings. Accumulating three “strikes” could result in a suspension of up to two years under current anti-doping rules.
Freigang has firmly stated: “There has never been any suspicion of doping!”
Addressing the controversy, Freigang explained that the issue was the result of “misunderstandings.” In a statement she posted on Instagram on Saturday evening, the 28-year-old clarified, “I want to be absolutely clear: there has never been any suspicion of doping against me.” She emphasised that the missed tests were not instances of “intentional avoidance” but rather “discrepancies or misunderstandings.”
Freigang further expressed her full support for anti-doping efforts, asserting that she values clean and fair competition. She noted that she has undergone several unannounced doping tests throughout her career, all of which yielded negative results. The “misunderstandings,” she added, were linked to the requirement for national team players to provide detailed daily and hourly whereabouts information in the system, an obligation that can sometimes lead to administrative errors.
