Christian Eriksen’s Future in Football Uncertain After Latest On-Field Collapse

Christian Eriksen is currently under medical observation in hospital after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday.

The 34-year-old midfielder was conscious as he was taken off the pitch by the medical team. The incident brought back memories of his cardiac arrest during a European Championship game in 2021, when he was representing Denmark against Finland.

During Sunday’s match in Odense, medical staff rushed onto the field immediately after Eriksen collapsed. The referee halted the game as players from both teams formed a protective circle around him while he received treatment, before he was able to walk to the ambulance.

The Danish Football Association later released an official statement confirming that Eriksen was conscious and ‘doing well under the circumstances’ following a brief period of unconsciousness.

Team doctor Morten Boesen provided an update on Monday, stating, “I spoke with Christian this morning and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits… the expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home.”

This latest episode occurred during Eriksen’s 151st appearance for the Danish national team and comes five years after his collapse in the Euro 2020 opener against Finland in May 2021.

Following that earlier incident, Eriksen was taken to hospital and stabilized. He later had an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) fitted due to ‘rhythm disturbances’ linked to his cardiac arrest, as confirmed by Boesen.

At that time, Eriksen was playing for Inter Milan. However, Serie A regulations prohibit players from competing with an ICD, leading to the termination of his contract in December 2021. This allowed him to continue his career in the Premier League with Brentford.

He made his comeback to competitive football in February 2022 and returned to international duty with Denmark a month later.

After spending six months with Brentford, Eriksen joined Manchester United, where he made 107 appearances over three years before signing with Wolfsburg on a free transfer last summer.

Following Sunday’s collapse, concerns have again emerged about whether Eriksen will be able to continue his professional football career.

As he continues his recovery in hospital, it is too early to make any decisions about his playing future. Eriksen still has a year left on his contract with Wolfsburg, who will compete in Germany’s second division next season after being relegated from the Bundesliga.

Further updates are expected in the coming days and weeks as medical evaluations continue and his family’s views are taken into account. If Eriksen, now 34, decides to retire, he would do so after an illustrious career spanning more than 800 matches for club and country, with league titles in both the Netherlands and Italy.
