Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy remains clear: the club is focused on a comprehensive rebuild of their midfield, not just short-term fixes. Reports suggest that United plan to bring in three new midfielders during this window, with Atalanta’s Ederson expected to be the first to arrive once his move is completed in early July.
The deal for the Brazilian midfielder is reportedly nearing completion. According to Sky Sports, United have reached an agreement worth £34 million plus £3.8 million in add-ons. Ederson is set to sign a four-year contract with the option of extending it for another year.
This approach indicates that United are not targeting a single type of midfielder. The club wants players who can bring energy, control, ball progression, defensive solidity, and long-term value to the team.
The link with Fernandes adds further intrigue. West Ham are said to value him around £80 million, while Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also shown interest in the player.
Meanwhile, The Guardian has reported that Ederson is seen as a key part of United’s preparations for their return to the UEFA Champions League, with football director Jason Wilcox being a strong admirer of the Brazilian’s qualities.
For manager Michael Carrick, this rebuild is of utmost importance. In recent seasons, United’s midfield has often looked exposed, hurried, or physically outmatched. Ederson’s arrival is expected to bring intensity and greater ball-winning ability, but Carrick knows he cannot address all the team’s issues alone.
This is why the plan to add two more midfielders makes strategic sense. One of them could serve as a deeper-lying playmaker, while the other might offer creativity or physical presence as a dynamic No.8.
Carrick’s primary objective is to achieve balance in midfield. If United manage to get that right, both Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo could see their performances improve significantly.
The club’s approach this summer appears more structured than before. While signing three midfielders may sound ambitious, the current squad requires such reinforcement. The departures of Casemiro and the team’s ongoing struggles to maintain control in the middle of the pitch have made midfield their biggest area of concern.
The real challenge for United lies in spending wisely. The club must avoid making high-profile signings without a clear tactical vision. Instead, Carrick and the recruitment team need to ensure that each addition fits seamlessly into the style of football they aim to play.
