Read, Digital Desk : For the past 10 months, the family of retired Bombay High Court judge G S Patel have been subjected to threats and violence across two continents in the wake of his historic April 23, 2024 judgment that settled the dispute regarding the leadership in the Dawoodi Bohra community. The latest incident occurred on June 5.
The demand is that Justice (Retd) Patel should make a YouTube video retracting the decision he gave on April 23, 2024. Last week on June 5, Aditi Patel who lives in London, received an anonymous letter which stated: ” You have been warned enough. The gang has been paid. The next step is to burn you and your family to death. If you comply with the instructions in the previous letter, this contract can be cancelled. A chip has also been provided, which shows what happens if you do not comply. “
Letter from fake address.
The letter is believed to be from Germany. It carried the German stamp, and was mailed from a fake London address. It carried an SD card which has been seized by the Hertfordshire Police.
What Justice Patel said.
Justice Patel stated that he had written to Indian High Commissioner in London and Acting Chief Justice of Bombay HC, besides informing the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. ” I have retired since April 2024, and the decision passed by Bombay HC cannot be changed by a youtube video.”
Threats started in August last year.
The threats and assaults started in August last year. Malashree Patel, wife of Justice G S Patel, had received a letter at their Mumbai home reading, ” We are a powerful group of members of the DB (Dawoodi Bohra) community who are interested in securing justice for our community… We have engaged a very capable and dangerous syndicate which carried out the warning in London. “
The letter, not dated, was not signed. Aditi Patel received similar threats, a similar letter in London in August last year where she had been claimed to be responsible for her burglary in her London residence on August 2025.
Daughter of justice Patel assaulted.
Then, on April 22 this year, her daughter was attacked from behind while walking to her school and she fell down on her face, leaving her bleeding on the road, her nose shattered. The letters, which the Patel family received also contain the detailed procedure under which the retired judge had to retract his decision: He was to record a YouTube video, stating he had to give the order under compulsion, and then mail this video to Bombay Bar Association and the media.
A non-cognizable complaint was filed by Mumbai’s Gamdevi Police against this letter on September 9 last year. Her daughter and son-in-law in London had lodged their complaint with the London police. An investigation has been initiated by the West Hertfordshire Counter-Terrorism Unit against the April 22 attack.
