Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing back former goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to Old Trafford during the upcoming summer transfer window. As per journalist Alan Nixon, the club is evaluating the Wolverhampton Wanderers shot-stopper as a potential experienced backup option. The 33-year-old is said to be open to returning to the North West at this point in his career.
Johnstone’s connection with Manchester United runs deep, as he progressed through the club’s academy system. Although he never managed to secure a regular first-team role, he is familiar with the club’s culture and environment.
After leaving United, Johnstone established himself with consistent performances for West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, amassing significant experience in both the Premier League and the Championship.
From United’s perspective, the move would not be aimed at recruiting a marquee number one goalkeeper. Instead, it would focus on adding a dependable, homegrown, and seasoned professional capable of supporting the squad without insisting on regular starts.
This approach could prove crucial, as changes are anticipated within United’s goalkeeping department. Reports suggest that Andre Onana has returned following his loan spell at Trabzonspor, though he is not expected to feature in Michael Carrick’s long-term plans. Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir is also tipped to depart the club.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are believed to be open to negotiations. After a disappointing campaign that culminated in relegation, several senior players are likely to move on, with Johnstone among the experienced names expected to attract offers.
Given that Johnstone was not Wolves’ undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, United may hope to secure his services at a relatively modest price.
The key question remains whether Johnstone fits the profile United are seeking. As a backup, he appears an ideal choice — experienced, composed, and well-versed in English football.
However, if United aim to find a genuine contender for the starting goalkeeper position, they might need to pursue a player of a higher calibre.
Overall, this would represent a pragmatic squad addition rather than a headline-grabbing signing. With more pressing priorities in midfield and attack, allocating a large budget for a reserve goalkeeper would not be a logical move for United this summer.
Should both Onana and Bayindir exit, Johnstone could emerge as a smart, low-cost solution for the club’s goalkeeping needs.
