Nine individuals have sustained injuries following a shooting incident that took place near the England football team’s World Cup base early on Saturday morning.
According to initial reports from The Athletic and The Independent on Sunday, police responded to the scene on Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, at around 4:00 a.m. Those wounded were taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
The Kansas City Police Department stated that no arrests have been made so far, and investigations are still ongoing. The shooting occurred roughly seven kilometres from Swope Soccer Village, which serves as the England team’s base for the tournament under manager Thomas Tuchel. The squad is presently in Florida for their World Cup preparations and recently recorded a 1-0 win over New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday.
England are scheduled to play a friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday before heading to Kansas City. Their opening World Cup group fixture, in the joint USA, Canada, and Mexico tournament, will be against Croatia on 17 June.
Due to its central position in the United States, Kansas City has become a preferred training location for several teams. Defending champions Argentina, along with Algeria and the Netherlands, are also expected to base their operations there.
