The Danish Football Association has announced that midfielder Christian Eriksen is “conscious and doing well” after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine.
The 34-year-old, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United and currently represents Wolfsburg in Germany, experienced a similar incident during Euro 2020. In that tournament, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest while playing against Finland in the group stage, after which he was fitted with a defibrillator.
During the late stages of the match against Ukraine, Eriksen once again fell to the ground but managed to walk off the pitch on his own before being taken to hospital for further evaluation.
Footage from the game showed Eriksen clutching his chest before collapsing in front of the substitutes’ bench. Medical personnel reached him almost immediately, while players from both teams formed a protective circle around him to shield the scene from spectators and cameras.
The match was suspended with 25 minutes left to play. The Danish Football Federation released a statement confirming: “Christian Eriksen is conscious and, given the circumstances, doing well. The match has been called off.”
Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Boesen, later added: “Christian is doing well and left the pitch on his own. From what I can tell, the pacemaker responded exactly as it should have.”
Boesen further explained: “He was briefly unconscious but regained awareness very quickly, and we were able to communicate with him almost immediately. He will now undergo additional tests at the hospital to understand what triggered the episode. We are in continuous contact with him and the medical team overseeing his care.”
“Christian is in good spirits and asked me to convey his thanks to all the players, assuring them that he’s okay,” the doctor added.
Eriksen previously received on-field medical attention for 13 minutes during Euro 2020 before being resuscitated and defibrillated. At that time, he was representing Inter Milan. After taking a break from football, he joined Brentford in 2022, then went on to play three seasons with Manchester United before moving to Wolfsburg last summer.
